History & Sightseeing Walking Tours Of Charleston – Public Tours

Street scene of historic homes in Charleston's South of Broad neighborhood.

Walking tours of Charleston, offered by dozens of local tour guides and companies, can be one of the most enjoyable and engaging ways to find out about the city’s history and its most important sights.

Charleston tours cover a wide variety of topics, from ghosts and pirates to local food culture, architecture and Black history, but many of its tours are intended to provide a general overview of the city’s history.

Introductory walking tours usually cover about a mile of ground, centered on the oldest and most popular areas of Charleston’s Historic District, namely the lower eastern peninsula: the French Quarter, the Battery and waterfront, and the more easterly portions of the residential South of Broad neighborhood.

Tours are divided between those offered by independent owner-guides and larger tour companies employing multiple guides to deliver their tours.
