Plantation Tours In Charleston, SC
The several plantations around the outskirts of Charleston are popular tourist attractions, but their distance from the historic peninsula makes them more difficult to get to than the city’s other sights if you won’t have access to a car.
A taxi or an Uber/Lyft may get you to the local plantations, but if your traveling party is small, it may be more cost-effective to take one of the several plantation tours offered by local guide companies.
For the most part, these tours consist of bus or van transportation to the plantation, usually with the price of admission to some or all of the plantation’s attractions included in the price of the ticket. What you see while at the plantation is exactly what you would see if visiting independently, with house and ground tours and other talks and activities given by the plantation’s own staff.
Your ticket effectively buys you a convenient way to get to the plantation from downtown (at an additional cost of around $25 per person on top of the plantation admission), with the downside being that you are visiting on the tour company’s schedule.
Private plantation tours are also available, that may offer a more flexible alternative to the public plantation excursions. Inquire with the company or guide as to whether they offer any additional interpretation over what is provided by the plantation itself.
