May marks the beginning of the high season at Myrtle Beach, with crowds starting to develop by the middle of the month. By Memorial Day weekend (one of the busiest weekends of the year), the city is extremely busy. You can expect large numbers of people at the beach and at restaurants and attractions, heavy traffic, and high prices for accommodation.
Weather in May is generally excellent, with plenty of sun and high temperatures, although it is not usually as hot and humid as during the height of summer. May, and especially earlier May before the crowds descend, can be one of the best times of year to visit the Myrtle Beach area.
The biggest events in Myrtle Beach in May include two multi-day bike festivals, each of which attracts thousands of bikers to the Myrtle Beach area, with attendant increases in traffic.
Other events this month include several food and music festivals, summer festivals, a popular car show hosted by the Myrtle Beach Corvette Club, arts events and more. There are also various free outdoor concerts and free family-friendly outdoor movies on during the month of May at several Myrtle Beach locations.
